When you're close to someone for a long time, things begin to feel redundant and repetitive. One, if not both people in the relationship will start to want new things, want to "go away" to a new place. But even if they did leave, if there is nothing better at the place they wanted to go away to, nothing would really change. So even if there is no longer a blazing flame of love, people hang around until something better comes along. This is a song about the emptiness of postmortem love.
