Why the empire didn't do this was actually explained in one of the books. Due to technical limitations, the Super Laser could not be fired more than once every 24 hours without overheating and causing severe damage to the station. This was one of many design flaws that was fixed with the second Death Star, which is why they were able to use it against the rebellion in RotJ.Still a great video, though. And there isn't any explanation for Leia's brainfart.

I don't want to stop the party, but the Death Star can't blow up gas planets. And the planet between the Death Star and the planet that the rebels are on is a gas planet.(And it can't shoot through it either)
