Well technically, according to the Star Wars vissual guide, it would take 24 hours to recharge their superlaser. So pilots are trained to fire on the first shot. So reasonably, it was totally necesarry to go arond the enormous planet.

@Spugstyer But that would pretty much defeat the point of star wars. Anyways, who leaves an exuast vent big enough for torpedoes to go down then make the whole station so unstable that said torpedoes then blow it up?
