Yavin is a gas giant, thay can't destroy it! They would still have been out of range even if they did destroy Yavin. And the first Death Star takes hours to reload!

The EU is about the plot that continued after. They were going to continue the films, but lost funding. By the time they would have been able to fund the REAL episode IV, they decided on prequels instead, making episode I episode IV and flipping it out. Someday they might start episode VI.
