You didnt occlude the vein once the cathalon was inserted, while you were putting the saline lock on. Blood would be pouring out.

To make sure it works and to make sure there is no blood in the tubing that may lead to clotting and blockage.

What's the purpose of flushing the IV site with normal saline after the insertion?

This was great. I'm starting IVs next week and reading the book just didn't do it for me. Its great to SEE the whole process over and over rather than read it!

The only thing you can't touch is the plastic catheter. At least, that's how I've been instructed. You want the catheter to remain sterile. If you touch it with your gloved fingers, you gotta start over again.

Paramedics and certain levels of EMT do it too. This is a great video. Just wish people in the field had veins like the mannequin :)
